Leading a month where the Seattle Sounders defense gave up only three goals (one of those from the spot) Chad Marshall’s September was strong. He also scored a goal as the club went 3-0-1 +4 surging into the playoff picture again. That earned him the September Player of the Month.
This is a popular vote among the fans of the league, after MLSSoccer.com editorial nominates five players. Marshall barely edged New York City FC’s David Villa by 0.72%.
Chad is the first defender to win the award since August of 2009 when Chad Marshall won selection with the Columbus Crew. He is also only the third defender to earn the recognition. José Burciaga Jr. and Jonathon Bornstein were selected in 2006. Numerous goalkeepers have won it. Marshall is the only three-time winner of the MLS Defender of the Year award.
Marshall’s September Player of the Month is the Seattle Sounders seventh such win. In August Nicolas Lodeiro won. This is the first time Seattle won back-to-back. Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins won in 2014. Fredy Montero won in 2009 and 2010. Freddie Ljungberg earned his Player of the Month in 2009.
