(author's note: Throughout the MLS season we shared a weekend MLS gamethread together in this space. Let's use that format today and use the second section to highlight Sounders in action around the world.)
Three Big Storylines:
- Today starts the final stage of CONCACAF qualifying for World Cup 2018. Six teams have made it to Round 5, affectionately called The Hex. USA, México, Panamá, Trinidad and Tobago, Honduras and Costa Rica will each play home and away over 10 matches between now and October 10th, 2017. The top three teams will qualify for Russia 2018 with the fourth place team qualifying for a playoff against the fifth place team from Asia for a World Cup berth.
- Mexico has brought in a very good squad for this game. Chicharito is in form. Carlos Vela is back in the fold. Andres Guardado and both Giovani and Jonathan dos Santos are on the team. But the USMNT has their new young hope and this one might actually be really good. 18 year old Christian Pulisic is expected to start in attack for the USMNT. The Borussia Dortmund player already has two goals in World Cup qualifying, but Mexico will represent a step up from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Pulisic will be joined in the attack by an in form Jozy Altidore.
- Dos a Cero. You are going to hear about the 2-0 storyline a lot today. This is the fifth World Cup qualifier in a row between USA and Mexico to be held in Columbus, all have finished 2-0 to the USMNT. Toss in the 2002 World Cup Round of 16 with the same scoreline and it's somewhat of a trend. Two Seattle Sounders kept the trend alive in 2013 when Eddie Johnson opened the scoring and Clint Dempsey missed a late penalty with the score already 2-0.
