The Seattle Sounders host the Colorado Rapids in leg one of the Western Conference Finals on November 22nd. Chris Penso will be the center referee in this match and players from both teams will need to be wary of making reckless challenges.
Penso has a knack for issuing yellow cards early and this could become a problem for both teams with multiple players sitting on a yellow card. If Osvaldo Alonso, Stefan Frei, Cristian Roldan, Dominique Badji, Jared Watts, Jermaine Jones, Shkelzen Gashi or Sam Cronin receive a yellow card in leg one, they will be suspended for leg two.
Alonso has been sitting on a yellow card since the Knockout Round game against Sporting Kansas City. Both Roldan and Frei both received yellow cards in leg two of the Western Conference Semifinals against FC Dallas. Badji, Watts and Jones all received their yellows in leg one of the Western Conference Semifinal against the LA Galaxy while Gashi and Cronin received theirs in the second leg.
Missing any of these players for either team would be a huge blow for their respective team’s chances on moving on to MLS Cup Final. We all know how Alonso plays the game and he has done well keeping his emotions in check the last two games. Roldan can be an emotional player as well and will need to not test Penso early.
Honestly, Frei should be fine and not have to worry about received another yellow as long as he doesn’t make any silly challenges or berates the referee.
