MLS Cup timeline: Tracking the path through 2016

The path to get there was a lot rougher than either side expected.

Way back in January and February, the list of MLS Cup favorites included both the Seattle Sounders and Toronto FC. But then 2016 happened. Seattle lost Obafemi Martins, Sigi Schmid and Clint Dempsey. TFC started with a lengthy road tip, and then struggled to cope with the temporary loss of Giovinco.

When it all mattered most, both teams won. This is how, after 11 months, Toronto and the Sounders made the 2016 MLS Cup Final.

After 90, or 120 minutes, on Dec. 10 Major League Soccer will have a first-time champion. It will either be a TFC team that recently discovered success or the Sounders, who have previously been only merely very good.

Fox will not lack for storylines. They will not lack for talent.
