One of the biggest off-the-field, offseason questions now has an answer as the Seattle Sounders formally unveiled their new play-by-play announcers on Wednesday. Matt Johnson will handle the radio duties, while Keith Costigan will be the lead voice on TV, with Kasey Keller remaining as the analyst. Both have limited play-by-play experience but are veteran voices.
Johnson has worked in radio for much of his career, most recently serving as the executive director of the Seattle Seahawks' radio network. Before the Seahawks and Sounders split business operations in 2014, he pulled double-duty in that role. Johnson also hosted the Sounders' pregame, postgame and halftime radio shows from 2009-2014, and had a Sounders-focused radio show on KIRO for some of that time.
Johnson will be joined by a rotating group of color analysts, including former Sounders Wade Webber and Danny Jackson and Seattle University head coach Pete Fewing.
"Joining an organization that does it first class is an opportunity I couldn't let go," Johnson said in a Q13 FOX segment this morning.
Costigan joins the Sounders after spending most of his broadcast career with Fox where he's filled a variety of roles, from color announcer to studio analyst to interviewer and more recently play-by-play on Bundesliga, Europa League and Univision's English-language MLS broadcasts.
"The gameday atmosphere is second to none. The idea that I'm going to call a game inside the stadium gives me goosebumps," Costigan said.
Jason Rantz will also be back as the host of the pre- and postgame shows. He'll also co-host a 60-minute Sounders show every Thursday at 9 p.m. with Johnson on KIRO.
