Darwin Jones scores two to lead Sounders past UCLA in preseason match

New, comments

A preseason game that was first on the schedule, then taken off was ultimately played on Sunday when the Seattle Sounders beat UCLA 5-1 in a 105-minute match that opened with a 45-minute period and was followed by two 30-minute ones.

Among the highlights were Jordan Morris scoring his first goal since signing with the Sounders, two more from preseason standout Darwin Jones and a goal apiece from Andreas Ivanschitz and Aaron Kovar. UCLA's lone goal, which actually gave them a lead, was scored by Sounders Academy product Sekyi Adekoya. The Sounders quickly responded with a pair of goals from Ivanschitz and Morris to win that 45-minute period.

Morris' goal was set up by a nice pass from Nelson Valdez.

The second period was scoreless, but the Sounders scored a trio of goals in the third with two of them coming from Jones, who was once again playing as a wing.

"We've played him almost exclusively on the flank, whereas last year we were thinking ‘Is he a center forward? Is he a winger?'" Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid said. "But I think we've determined he's a winger and he's had more success there."

The Sounders will play the Galaxy in one more preseason game at StubHub Center on Wednesday before heading back to Seattle for the final stages of preparation ahead of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal against Club America.
