USWNT v. Trinidad & Tobago: Lineups, TV, how to watch Olympic qualifying semifinals

New, 127 comments

The U.S. could earn a berth to Rio tonight with a win in their Olympic qualifying semifinal match.

After winning Group A in the 2016 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Championship with three wins and a +16 goal differential, the U.S. Women's National Team takes on Trinidad & Tobago (T&T) tonight in the all-important semifinal match. The game kicks off at 5:30 p.m. PT, and will air on NBC Sports Network and stream live on NBC Live Extra.

A win today secures a berth to Rio. It also puts the USWNT through to a final match against either Canada or Costa Rica, who finished second in Group A. On that note, we're posting the gamethread a bit early for any of you watching the Canada/Costa Rica match, which kicks off at 2:30 p.m. PT today. Canada, who finished at the top of Group B with a +21 goal differential, faces a Costa Rica side that beat Mexico 2-1 and scored 9 against Puerto Rico.

The Costa Ricans are led by veterans Shirley Cruz and Karla Villalobos, who scored 3 goals in the group stage. Meanwhile, Raquel Rodriquez, the second pick in this year's NWSL draft, has already scored 5 goals this tournament.

The USA is 9-0-0 all-time vs. T&T, but the Soca Princesses managed to hold the U.S. to a tight 1-0 win during qualifying for the 2015 Women's World Cup. The most recent meeting between the two countries was last December during the World Cup Victory Tour. The USWNT won that game 6-0, powered by a Christen Press hattrick. The two sides were also set to compete in Hawaii, but that match was canceled due to poor turf conditions.

The Soca Princesses have scored seven goals this tournament, including three by former Seattle Reign and Sounders Women player Kennya Cordner. They've also given up eight goals, with six of those coming from Canada.

Six players have scored for the U.S. in the tourney so far: Crystal Dunn (6), Carli Lloyd (3), Alex Morgan (2), Christen Press (2), Kelley O'Hara (1) and Samantha Mewis (1). Seattle Reign keeper Hope Solo earned her 93rd shutout against Mexico and now has 188 caps and 142 wins.
