NYCFC's lineup fun, the California Clásico and Victor Mansaray plays for the US U20 team on a free stream. Three Big Storylines, National TV and Streaming Listing and From a Sounders Point of View are here in your MLS Week 3 Gamethread

Three Big Storylines:

  1. W-M. W-M?  W-M! New York City FC employed the little used W-M formation in their last home game against Toronto FC. NYCFC open the MLS weekend with the Friday night UniMas game, hosting Orlando City and a red hot Cyle Larin, so we will not have to wait long to see what they do this week. New manager Patrick Vieira has said they plan to use a variety of formations this year including a planned 3-3-4. Playing at Yankee Stadium gives them the unique opportunity to try out different formations. The field is very small and it means a player like Andrea Pirlo gets more touches. Anytime Pirlo can get more touches is great for the neutral MLS fan.
  2. It's Early. It's definitely early in the season, but the four teams without a point are surprising: New York Red Bulls, Columbus Crew SC, Vancouver Whitecaps and the Seattle Sounders. The Sounders host the Whitecaps on Saturday (this is not the Gamethread you are looking for) while Columbus is taking on a surprisingly competent Chicago Fire team (Saturday, 2 PM, MLS Live) in Bridgeview and the New York Red Bulls host the Houston Dynamo (Saturdday, 4 PM, MLS Live) who just beat FC Dallas 5-0 last weekend.
  3. The California Clásico is the name of the LA Galaxy v San Jose Earthquakes game that takes place Saturday in Carson (7:30 PM, MLS Live). To an outsider or someone new to MLS it seems a bit random to Clásico up this rivalry. But it has actually been a historically good match in MLS history. San Jose beat the Galaxy in the 2001 MLS Cup in overtime 2-1 with goals from Landon Donovan and Dwayne DeRosario. The rivalry intensified when Donovan returned in 2004 from a brief stint in Germany to play for the Galaxy after starting his career with the Quakes. Quakes General Manager Alexi Lalas traded Donovan's rights to the Galaxy when he was in Germany. Lalas went on to become the Galaxy General Manager in 2006.
