After a bit of a rocky start, Stefan Frei has established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in MLS. In 2014, he helped the team win the U.S. Open Cup-Supporters' Shield double. Last year, he posted the top save percentage and was one the top goalkeepers in the league in most other key statistical categories. In other words, he's earned the right to have a bad game here and there.
On the whole, his performance in the season opener against Sporting Kansas City was not bad, but it will be remembered for one play. Sporting KC's goal came on an aspirational shot from outside the box that somehow managed to find its way under Frei's arm. Frei was not about to hide from the spotlight.
So dissapointed that a good performance by the team was ruined by my mistake last night... Looking ahead to RSL to bounce back quickly #EBFG

Even when Frei wasn't playing so well at the start of 2014, he was similarly forthcoming with self criticism. But hopefully he doesn't dwell on this one too much. He's shown that he'll save far more points for the Sounders then he'll cost them.
