Sounders at Colorado Rapids, recap: Seattle crushed by Jermaine Jones, referees

Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

In another MLS match marred by horrific refereeing, the Seattle Sounders lose to the Colorado Rapids. The 3-1 scoreline ignores that Kevin Doyle scored from an offside position. Brad Evans was so outraged that he immediately earned a yellow card for dissent. Not seconds later he earned a second yellow card, also for dissent. While the team captain was in the right, he was also in the wrong.

Many a Sounder wishes they could take that second yellow for Evans. The third goal by sub Doyle assisted by sub and recent signing Dennis Castillo crushed the Sounders. Without it there was hope. Jordan Morris scored his second goal and is now on a streak. Despite Herculez Gomez getting rightly called for a penalty, Stefan Frei was ready.

He stuffed the penalty and signaled that Seattle would not go quietly in the night. They would not give up the fight.

Jermaine Jones opened the scoring in the 21st minute. Colorado punished Seattle again with a goal in the 51st by Luis Solignac, but then the Sounders woke up. No longer settling to dominate possession in non-threatening situations, the attack began. Sounders dominated possession with 57% while also holding their own in passing, and were relatively equal on shots. All of that was despite both Clint Dempsey and Nelson Haedo Valdez missing the game.

In a match that should be analyzed for the competing styles put on display, it will instead be another game where the story is referees being the center of attention.

Instead of talking about Herculez Gomez getting his first start, Oalex Anderson getting his second start, Morris getting his second goal, the topic is Jorge Gonzalez and his crew.

Seattle deserved to lose. They looked competitive in what could have been an entertaining 2-1 loss. This recap should be about a 2-1 loss or maybe a 2-2 draw.

It is not. That isn't Sigi Schmid's fault, nor Evans, Frei or any other Sounders' fault.
