U.S. Open Cup early rounds could feature all-Puget Sound matchup

On May 11th the 102nd Lamar Hunt US Open Cup gets underway. In the Puget Sound that means PDL side Sounders U23s get to host California club Outbreak FC.

Outbreak is based out of Long Beach/Huntington Beach where they host adult and youth teams. Their team earned a chance at the Open Cup through local qualifying, beating San Pedro Monsters FC and Buena Park FC. These are truly plucky amateurs.

Darren Sawatzky's U23s will be in training, but will have not yet played any PDL matches. Their first league match is on May 22nd against Crossfire. All home games are at Sunset Stadium in Sumner this year. Early May matches are generally short a few players because the college students on the quarter system are still in class.

IF the U23s win they will head to Kitsap to face the Pumas at Gordon Field. Kitsap is a pro-PDL team that has loaned players to USL sides (including Carlos Patino now with S2) and has two players on loan from Real Monarchs. The Kitsap Pumas are already in preseason and are announcing player signings nearly daily.

That Sounders U23-at-Kitsap Pumas match would take place on May 18th.

The winner advances to the third round (when NASL teams join the Open Cup). That potential match up will be determined after the First Round. Seattle Sounders FC join in the Fourth Round.
