The Seattle Reign will be looking to right two ships when they kick off against FC Kansas City at 4pm this afternoon. For one, it'll be their first home match since the shock opening weekend loss against Sky Blue — their first ever loss at Memorial Stadium. And it'll be the first meeting with Kansas City since last season's NWSL Final loss.
If Seattle does get their double revenge, they'll have to do it without one of their most important players. Jess Fishlock is out 4 to 6 weeks with a broken tibia after getting tangled with McCall Zerboni in the Boston match. The Welsh dragon's skill and work rate across the entire pitch are irreplaceable, and the center midfield position is particularly thin this year after both Amber Brooks and Mariah Bullock left in the offseason. To compensate Seattle will likely have to rely heavily on newly signed midfielder Lindsay Elston.
FC Kansas City is going through their own struggles. The consecutive-championship-winning roster was gutted in the offseason by the retirement of Lauren Holiday and the news that Amy Rodriguez would miss the season to have a child. They tried to replace A-Rod with Sydney Leroux, who promptly announced that she too was pregnant and now the defending champions are winless through the first two games. Though it's worth noting they've never relied on a hot start. In neither of their championship seasons did they pick up a win in their first two.
Regardless, the weather will be perfect again as the Reign look to start another home winning streak.
