The US Men's National Team opens up their Copa America Centenario preparation with the first of three friendlies before kicking off against Colombia on June 3rd at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara. This is the first time the USA and Puerto Rico have played a full international match.
This game comes at a curious time in the international calendar. It is not a FIFA date and MLS players are not available. But manager Jurgen Klinsmann wanted a game for his European based players to remain in rhythm. Since there are not enough European based players to fill out the full roster, the roster for this match is different than the final USMNT roster for Copa America that was announced yesterday as seven players were added that were not on the Copa America preliminary roster. It is worth noting that this is not a unique quirk of Jurgen Klinsmann's scheduling, England take on Turkey (9 AM, Fox Sports 2) even as the FA Cup was won yesterday by Manchester United and Liverpool contested the Europa League Final on Wednesday.
Full Roster for Puerto Rico:
Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Colorado Rapids), Zach Steffen (SC Freiburg)
Defenders: John Brooks (Hertha Berlin), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Eric Lichaj (Nottingham Forest), Matt Miazga (Chelsea), Michael Orozco (Club Tijuana), Tim Ream (Fulham), DeAndre Yedlin (Tottenham Hotspur)
Midfielders: Alejandro Bedoya (Nantes), Emerson Hyndman (Fulham), Fabian Johnson (Borussia Monchengladbach), Perry Kitchen (Heart of Midlothian), Alfredo Morales (Ingolstadt), Caleb Stanko (SC Freiburg), Danny Williams (Reading)
Forwards: Paul Arriola (Club Tijuana), Julian Green (Bayern Munich), Fabrice Picault (FC St. Pauli), Amando Moreno (Club Tijuana), Bobby Wood (Hamburg)
(Italics: player not on preliminary Copa America roster)
Sounder at Heart covered the final Copa America roster announcement and the surprise inclusions (Timothy Chandler?) and exclusions (Jordan Morris!) yesterday, here is the link.
Of note, Herculez Gomez is working as the color commentary for Fox Sports. Gomez is joined by Mark Followill on play by play duties and Grant Wahl on site in Puerto Rico.
