Nicolas Lodeiro doesn't appear to be any closer to joining the Seattle Sounders than he was last week, but how the deal might look is starting to come into focus.
According to the latest report, the Sounders have offered the Uruguay international and Boca Juniors midfielder a contract offer that would last through 2020. Lodeiro is currently 27 years old.
Right now Lodeiro is being offered a four-year contract in Seattle, from what Argentine media is reporting.— Juan G. Arango (@JuanG_Arango) May 23, 2016
This report comes after confirmation that Lodeiro would be unavailable to the Sounders until at least the end of Boca Juniors' run in the Copa Libertadores, which could go until July 27th. Boca Juniors has already qualified for the semifinals of South America's club championship, which would likely keep him occupied until mid-July. Considering he'll be coming off a summer that also includes Copa America, the Sounders would likely want to rest him before he started playing for the rave green and it's possible that he wouldn't see time in MLS until September.
The Sounders' offer is hardly a done deal though, especially considering that Lodeiro's agent recently confirmed the player is being pursued by one of the "big three" Portuguese teams. Argentine media outlets are reporting that team to be S.L. Benfica, despite the fact that they might not be able to afford Lodeiro's $7-8 million transfer fee after just having signed striker Kostas Mitroglou from Fulham.
