Major Link Soccer: Kaka joins Brazil for Copa América

An injury to Douglas Costa leaves an opening for the Orlando City SC star. What did we learn from the USMNT's friendly victory over Ecuador? Shalrie Joseph is back.

Major League Soccer

Orlando City SC will add another Teixeira to the league in the summer transfer windowDionatan Teixeira is 23, Brazilian-Slovakian, a centerback, and comes over from Stoke City.

The Hudson River Derby turned stupid and a little violent after the Red Bulls defeated NYCFC by a ridiculous scoreline. Police had to step in and quiet things down, and some of the scene was captured on video here.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is excited about the part the city's new MLS team will play in the city's sports landscape. Soccer fan Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson, on the other hand, says that there are "no soccer fans" in Atlanta, so I guess it's time to can the whole thing and choose a new city.

Speaking of expansion, if you missed the series of maps on Reddit that show transit times to each MLS stadium, the Goat Parade points out that LAFC's stadium will actually have very good public transit options (although, of course, you can expect most Angelinos to drive).

Kaka will play in the Copa América Centenario after all. The Brazil star has been called up to replace the injured Douglas Costa for the tournament.

Seattle continues to tumble down in RSL Soapbox's aggregate power rankings, falling to 14th from the heady heights of 9th just three weeks ago. LA Galaxy and the Colorado Rapids are hanging out together at the top.

One thing that's obvious from looking at those rankings is that the Western Conference teams are crowding up the top and middle, and the Eastern Conference teams, with some notable exceptions, are holdin' down the bottom. But why, you ask? American Soccer Analysis tries to answer this by looking at the type and frequency of shots each MLS team takes.

Frank Lampard is understandably taking the brunt of criticism for his absence from the field for NYCFC, although it can be certainly be argued how much of that is his fault. However, he says he's "not here to prove, he's here to win." We'll see how that goes.

Do you know how many general MLS and MLS team podcasts are out there? A surprisingly massive amount. I didn't do the math, but I'm pretty sure you could spend a couple of days out of each week just continuously listening to podcasts about MLS, though I'm not sure I'd recommend it. Here's a comprehensive list in case you need to expand your podcast subscription level.

If you really REALLY need to know what the view of the pitch looks like from your potential seat at CenturyLink Field before you purchase, now you can experience it. See in virtual reality what an empty and quiet CLink would be like. Examine the cupholder situation. Etc.

Root Sports NW has completed a pretty substantial studio upgrade, with plenty of new tech. GeekWire has the details.

Other US Leagues

USL continues to expand and expand some more. San Diego appears to be the latest city to join in on the fun, reportedly in 2018.

Shalrie Joseph has signed to play for the Boston Bolts of the USL PDL at 37 years old. Yes, that's real.

US Soccer / Copa América

There is now officially an official song for the Copa América, and it is 'Superstars' by Pitbull and Becky G.

How about a power ranking of the Copa squads! Will Haiti upset Peru? Is this Messi's tournament to lose?

What did we learn from the USMNT's narrow victory over Ecuador in the recent friendly? Well, we learned some things about Christian Pulisic and Darlington Nagbe, among other things. Or maybe we only learned one thing, about Michael Bradley, if you ask FOX Sports. Or maybe we learned that Clint Dempsey is not a #9, among other things, if you ask the US Soccer Players website.

If you're Kevin McCauley, you are trapped between the optimistic interpretation of the match and the pessimistic one. Will Jurgen Klinsmann crush that optimism?

Washington Senator Patty Murray's nonbinding resolution in support of equal pay for the USWNT passed. Also, it sounds as if the lawsuit will go to trial.

There's a lot of debate about 'finishing' as a skill in soccer, especially when it comes to how to quantify it. This post on Soccer Analytics and Predictions approaches it from an even simpler way: What exactly do we mean when we say 'finishing skill'?

The Economist checked in on the state of American soccer as the Copa América gets set to begin here. They note about what you expect: big growth in fandom and improvements in MLS, but still struggling to attract great players in their primes.
