Major League Standings: Copa America break is over

Sounders don’t lose too much on the West even with a loss

NEWS: Orlando Pulse Nightclub Shooting Naples Daily News-USA TODAY Sports

Seattle may not have found any points but at least most of the West didn’t run away from them. Of course, the playoff door isn’t shut but still sitting in 9th is a little dim. Only Colorado and KC found wins out West and Sporting’s came at the expense of FC Dallas picking up zero points.

Saturday 6/18-

NYCFC 3 - Philadelphia Union 2: Turns out this is a top game in the East with the teams ending the weekend at first and third in the conference. For the first time, all three DPs found the back of he net for NYC with Lampard, Villa, and Pirlo all scoring. With a 3-0 lead through 50 minutes, they stopped pushing as hard and let Philly back into the game a bit through a PK when Jason Hernandez plowed through the back of Fabian Herbers in the box. Roland Alberg converted it and gave a fleeting hope to Union fans. Union got more hope late with an 88th minute header that deflected off Brillant making it 3-2 but that’s where it ended.

Vancouver Whitecaps 1 - New England 2: Vancouver does their part in helping the Sounders stay in shouting distance. Credit Federal Way native Kelyn Rowe for scoring the winning goal. Nicolas Mezquida scored a beautiful free kick between the Revs goals.

Columbus Crew 0 - Montreal Impact 0: Two east teams drew, congrats. Should you care about the match? Maybe...I mean Drogba got a yellow for not retreating. Other than that, really there’s not much to care about in this one.

Orlando City 2 - San Jose Earthquakes 2: First half, doesn’t matter too much. The second half had a stoppage to honor the shooting victims that was moving. Then a 66th minute goal and followed up by three goals in the final five minutes plus stoppage including a Chad Barrett goal. It took two in stoppage, an OCSC go-ahead goal and Shea Salinas’ closer to get a point back for the fellow basement dweller Earthquakes.

Toronto FC 1 - Los Angeles Galaxy 0: Thank you Canada. The Western Conference Canadians lost and the Eastern Conference ones that played the West, won. It took a Drew Moor header, off a headed pass from former Sounder Eriq Zavaleta. LA fell to 6th in the West, which is one of the good things from the weekend.

Colorado Rapids 2 - Chicago Fire 1: I’m going to eat my words for the whole season now, Colorado looks good. Yes this was the Fire, but they did it again and without Jermaine Jones. Colorado is leading the West and league by a minimum three points and games in hand. The Rapids could very well win the shield and that just makes me a bit sad. Oh and to add insult to injury, Marco Pappa had the 89th minute winner.

Houston Dynamo 0 - DC United 0: Only three teams have less points than Seattle, this is two of them. You should’ve expected a boring draw from these two or a crazy blowout. We got a draw and as fans we shouldn’t be shocked. If you want to rewatch matches on MLS Live or anywhere, this isn’t the one to use your time on.

Real Salt Lake 2 - Portland Timbers 2: RSL winning may not have hurt the Sounders too much with them already sitting in third but a draw and dropping points is nice. Portland losing is always wonderful but at least a draw isn’t much. They’ll still miss the playoffs if the season ended today, so that’s a treat. El Burrito and Yura Movsisyan had goals that sandwiched Fanendo Adi and Luis Melano’s. Overall this one was pretty exciting but if you don’t like either team, it may not hold your interest.

Sunday 6/19-

Sporting Kansas City 2 - FC Dallas 0: Sporting did not deserve to win for most of the match but they did it so congrats to them. Problem being, FC Dallas is in 2nd and a win probably would not have hurt us. Sporting with a win gave points to a team lacking hope and points and sitting outside of the playoffs, this one hurts Seattle’s chances. It was two late first half goals, including a PK that Benny Feilhaber converted. It put a damper on Pareja’s halftime talk and Dallas couldn’t come back.

New York Red Bulls 2 - Sounders 0: So yea...First half great. Second half, not so much. They need to finish better among other things. So yea...that’s all I will say here.

Sounders are outside of the playoffs still and it is getting a bit more hopeless but there is still time and a chance. The rest of the West is sliding backwards across the board, if the Rave Green can pick up points through the rest of June and turn up the heat throughout the rest of summer, Seattle could still make the playoffs and make us forgot about this start. If they stay in this funk, it’ll be a painful ending this year.
