The one thing the United States knew above all other things was that they needed to stop Leo Messi. So far, that's been a complete disaster. Argentina now leads 2-0 after Messi scored on a beautiful free kick from about 25 yards out.
That happens, but it was preventable. The sequence started with an awful giveaway by Chris Wondolowski, who then compounded the mistake by chasing down everyone he could before finally fouling Messi in a dangerous spot.
To Messi's credit, the kick was an absolutely beauty. His left-footed curler managed to hit side netting and nearly scraped the underside of the crossbar.
Still, the decision to start Wondolowski is looking like a monumental disaster by Jurgen Klinsmann.
