Steve Zakuani among former Sounders calling out 2016 team

Steve Zakuani is trending on Twitter in Seattle because of his harsh critique of the Sounders' 2016 season, but he's not alone in his criticism.

Whether on Twitter or on Facebook Steve Zakuani, current radio analyst and podcast host with Sounders FC, is trending on Twitter in Seattle. A former Sounders player himself, Zakuani isn't trending because of his play on the field, but because of his tweets regarding Saturday's 2-nil loss to NYCFC. Zakuani is critical of the current Sounders squad, and he is not alone.

These aren't keyboard warriors. These are three of the greatest players to wear the Rave Green as well as a former announcer for the team. Their thoughts mirror many of your thoughts.

Like the current team captain, Steve Zakuani suggests some of the current squad accepts losing.

Unlike many fans, Zakuani is not blaming Sigi Schmid. For the former winger, the blame lies on certain players.

He is unwilling to hear people suggest that the Sounders' woes are because the team is too young. He was a young player for the Sounders once, playing along with other young players. They did quite well.

Fredy Montero read Zakuani's tweets, and he agrees with the overall theme. Ross Fletcher's critique focused on the forwards, who couldn't score against the worst defense in the league.

Eddie Johnson suggests there are deeper roots than just effort and failures at forward. EJ wants you to go back and listen to his time on Sound of Soccer and SonarFeed last month.

But mostly he's wondering why a DP forward isn't performing.

Things in Soundersville are not good. A team that was once playing decent and losing is now playing poorly and still losing. In many ways it is worse than the Dire Days. Last year the injuries and callups were massive. The holes in the starting XI and 18 were obvious and not fixable.

In 2016 the record is slightly better, but the proximity to the Ideal XI is close. Today's XI in the 2-nil loss only lacked Dempsey.

Like you, like all of us at Sounder at Heart, Steve isn't giving up his love of the Rave Green. He isn't quitting, but he is willing to be critical.
