Three Big Storylines:
- MLS is back! Copa America Centenario has come and gone, congrats to Chile on your win, and the Euro's are starting to wind down. So the domestic league takes center stage this holiday weekend with a full slate of 10 games spread out over 4 days. The first UniMas Friday Night Doubleheader of the year opens the weekend, three games on Saturday including your Sounders, two national TV games on Sunday back on their traditional ESPN and FS1 networks and three games on Fourth of July Monday round out the MLS weekend.
- Tim Howard will make his Colorado Rapids debut on Monday against the Portland Timbers in what is sure to be a sold out Dick's Sporting Goods Park (to be fair, there are fireworks and everyone loves fireworks). Rumors started to circulate back in January that Howard was going to sign with the Rapids and the club confirmed the signing on March 2nd, pending Howard's finishing his season with Everton. In the interim the Rapids have flourished, they are on a club record 11 match unbeaten run and lead MLS with 32 points on a robust 2.0 PPG.
- New York City FC hosts the New York Red Bulls for the second time this season. The last time it did not go well for NYCFC as they lost at home 7-0. The shocking margin tied for the largest victory in MLS history. The early match time (9 AM Pacific, Noon local) is because ESPN is running this match as a lead in for the last European Championship quarterfinal featuring France hosting those plucky upstarts from Iceland.
From a Sounders Point of View:
Three Points. Just get three points in Toronto.
I mean it will be nice if the Chicago Fire beat the San Jose Earthquakes at home on Friday night UniMas followed by D.C. United pulling a smash and grab at Real Salt Lake in the doubleheader nightcap. But what the Seattle Sounders need right now is to put their collective head down and just start accumulating points, then look up in August to see where we are.
