Results-wise, things have been looking up for Sounders FC 2. After a back-and-forth 3-2 victory against Arizona United SC, the Rave Green now sit at 12th place in the Western Conference. They’ve won their past two games; they are now 3 points out of a playoff spot.
The Sounders started energetically in today’s 100º match, notching the first tally in the 25th minute. Midfielder Zach Mathers sent a slicing ball from his own half to Darwin Jones and past Arizona’s backline: Jones finished with a punt of a kick right into the back netting. Arizona quickly equalized (after having stripped the ball from Jordan Schweitzer), and a few minutes later pulled in front after once again stealing the ball from S2’s midfield.
S2 managed to get a goal back before the half though, (a Jordan Schweitzer chip over United’s withdrawn goalkeeper), and in the second half pulled ahead thanks to another Darwin Jones rocket-shot. They managed to solidify the scoreline throughout the rest of the match, despite a few shaky moments.
Darwin Jones
If you were scouting Jones, tonight’s game would have been the perfect one to watch. He was fast. He cut in from the wings and finished well. He tried to take on players and lost; frequently. Today showed the best and worst of the Husky alumnus.
Charlie Lyon
Lyon bobbled a few crosses, and he looked fairly slow with reflex saves. Perhaps it was just the heat, (or the two fans with mega-phones who were heckling him throughout the entire second half), but he needs to do better in the future.
Andy Craven
Craven has consistently shown himself as S2’s most MLS-ready player in the past few months. His hold up play has given S2 some much need respite from defending, his pressure on offense has turned in to in a lot of fortuitous turnovers, and his playmaking has resulted in goals.
