Olympic Sunday: What to Watch For

New, 1 comment

After a crazy two days featuring eight quarter-final soccer matches, today is a rest day. Sounder at Heart has your Rio Olympics Day 9 Open Thread featuring the first gold medal in golf in over 100 years, a return to the Olympics after a 20 year hiatus for one hall of fame athlete, a guaranteed USA gold medal and Usain Bolt trying to make history again in prime time

We here at Sounder at Heart are giving you a daily Olympic open thread. And since we are a soccer site, it naturally focuses on soccer. Well today is a rest day for the soccer tournament as the quarterfinals came to an end on Sunday with the USWNT on their way home.

Rest assured we will have a full preview of the Soccer Semi-Finals when they return on Tuesday (Women) and Wednesday (Men).

Other Notable Olympic Broadcasts Today:

Men's Golf Final Round

After shooting a third-round 65, Justin Rose (-12) will take a one-shot advantage over Henrik Stenson (-11) into the final tee time on Sunday. They will be joined by Australia's Marcus Fraser (-9) who was the leader after both the first and second round. After a tepid start to the tournament the final round looks to be a star studded affair and as Rose's 65 from Saturday shows, an early starter could put up a low number and make the medal stand.  The kicker with Men's gold is the course is set up with easier rough and forgiving greens so that it's main defense against the top golfers in the world is wind.  And it's going to be calm and around 30C (86F) tomorrow.  Someone early could post  a very low number and totally change the tenor of the day.

Tennis Gold Medal Matches

Martina Hingis participated in her first Olympics Atlanta 1996, this is her first time back.  For someone who dominated the sport for so long and was particularly adept at the Double's Tennis game, you would assume she has an Olympic Medal.  But tomorrow is her first chance.  Martina Hingis partners Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland against Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina of Russia in the Women's Doubles final.

The Men's singles final will also be contested. Defending Gold Medalist Andy Murray plays Juan Martin del Potro for Gold while Spain's Rafael Nadal plays Japan's Nishikori Kei for bronze.

Want to see the USA guaranteed a Gold Medal?  Sure you do.  Since Katie Ledecky is done for these Olympics, I give you the Tennis Mixed Doubles Final.  Americans Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram face Americans Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jack Sock for the Mixed Doubles Gold Medal.  It is pretty certain they are queueing up the Star Spangled Banner now.

8 AM - 4 PM, Bravo Network

NBC Primetime has a big night on Sunday.  Usain Bolt goes for his unprecedented third consecutive gold in the Men's 100M, the Men's 400M Finals featuring American Gold Medalist from 2008 LaShawn Merritt will also be run, Simone Biles goes for gold in the vault and Kerri Walsh Jennings' with new partner April Ross will be in the Beach Volleyball quarterfinal.

7 PM - Midnight, NBC
