Third place games in major international tournaments are inherently worthless wastes of time that are just designed to sell one more set of broadcasts rights fees and commercials, with one notable exception: The Olympic Bronze Medal Game. Win this game and for the rest of your life you can say you are an Olympic Medalist. Lose the game and you were just on a team that went to the Olympics, did okay and lost your last two games. (This was covered yesterday, but bears repeating.)

How to Watch, Men's Olympic Soccer Medal Matches:

Bronze Medal Game:

Honduras v Nigeria
Saturday, 9 AM
Location: Mineirao, Belo Horizonte
TV: NBCSN, Olympic Soccer Channel
Streaming: Men's Soccer Bronze Medal

This is why Hugo Garcia is running Sounder at Heart today

Honduras are looking to take home their first Olympic medal.  Not their first soccer medal, their first Olympic medal of any kind for the entire nation.  Honduras are in their 12th Olympics (11 Summer, 1 Winter).  This game matters to Honduras.  After getting blown out 6-0 by Brazil in the semi-finals Honduras are hoping to leave the tournament on a high note and looking to extend Concacaf's medal streak to two (Mexico won the gold in London 2012).

Nigeria earned a silver medal as recently as 2008 and were on an absolute roll heading into the semi-finals against Germany hoping to get to Rio for the final.  They will be disappointed to be playing in the bronze medal match after losing to Germany 2-0 in Sao Paulo.  Due to scheduling quirks, Nigeria never made it to Rio De Janeiro.  Their tournament has seen them play in Manaus, Manaus, Sao Paulo, Salvador, Sao Paulo and today in Belo Horizonte.

Gold Medal Game:

Brazil v Germany
Saturday, 1:30 PM
Location: Maracana, Rio De Janiero
TV: NBCSN, Olympic Soccer Channel
Streaming: Men's Soccer Gold Medal

This is the game everyone has been waiting to see.  If you somehow need a reminder, the last time these teams met it was in the World Cup semi-final.  Germany put on a stunning display winning 7-1, scoring five goals in an overwhelming 18 minute stretch from the 11th through 29th minute.  Neymar missed that game due to injury and this being a U-23 tournament, the teams are composed of different players.

Brazil have never won gold in soccer, it's the one trophy missing from their massive trophy case.  They have finished with the silver medal three times: 1984 (lost to France), 1988 (Soviet Union) and 2012 (Mexico).  This is the one medal the country as a whole pointed to when they were awarded the right to host the Olympics over Chicago, Tokyo and Madrid back on October 2nd, 2009.

The pressure is squarely on Brazil to win this game in the historic confines of a sold out Maracana stadium.  But none more so than on Neymar.  Neymar is 24 years old and one of three over age players selected for the team, Midfielder Renato Augusto and Goalkeeper Fernando Prass are the other two.  At 24 years old, Neymar has already scored 46 goals for the senior team and sits fifth all time on Brazil's scoring list.  Brazil have yet to give up a goal in the Olympics, after drawing their first two matches 0-0 they have beaten Denmark (4-0), Colombia (2-0) and Honduras (6-0) en route to the final.

Germany's three over-aged players are the Bender twins, Lars and Sven, both midfielders and Striker Nils Petersen.  Germany had a shaky start to their tournament drawing with Mexico (2-2) and South Korea (3-3) before thrashing Fiji (10-0) and then rolled through the knockout stages beating Portugal (4-0) in the quarterfinals before handling Nigeria (2-0) in the semi-finals.

For all the talk of Brazil needing an Olympic medal to fill out their trophy case, Germany are in the same predicament.  Well depending on what list you look at as East Germany won the gold medal in Montreal 1976.  Germany has a bronze in Tokyo 1964 and West Germany has bronze in Seoul 1988.
