Clint Dempsey is undergoing medical tests for an irregular heartbeat, the Seattle Sounders announced on Friday. As a result, Dempsey won’t be available for Sunday’s game against the Portland Timbers or a pair of upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The Sounders’ next game is not until Sept. 10 -- at the San Jose Earthquakes — but it remains unclear if he’d be cleared by then.

"As the medical process unfolds and information is gathered internally, no other details are being made publicly available at this time," the Sounders release stated.

Although the Sounders had apparently been monitoring this situation for some time, there had been no public concerns voiced previously. There were also no signs of trouble in Dempsey’s on-field performances. Dempsey scored a pair of goals in his most recent match, he now has five goals in his past three appearances and six goals in his past six games. After a slow start, Dempsey’s recent resurgence has seen him move into the team lead with eight goals.
