Obafemi Martins caused a minor stir — at least on social media — when he was spotted at S2’s match on Monday. As expected, though, it was merely a social visit.
“I said hello,” Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer said when asked about it on Tuesday. “He was very friendly and seemed to be in good spirits. He’s on vacation. He’s taking a little break, that was it. There’s no other rumors, I know there were some on social media, but that’s nothing. He’s under contract, so we can’t do that.”
If there is any simmering bad blood between Martins and the organization over the ill-timed nature of his transfer — it came mere weeks before the start of this season — it wasn’t apparent in Schmetzer’s comments.
That said, the two sides seem to be at peace with the decision to go their separate ways. The Sounders have at least started to recover from their awful start. Martins, too, has been looking like his old self ever since an injury to Demba Ba opened up a spot in the starting lineup. Five of Martins’ eight CSL goals have come in the five matches since Ba’s horrific leg break.
