The Reign visit Chicago today in a match with enormous playoff implications. Seattle took care of business last week with a home win over Portland, but teams around them aren’t cooperating and they’re holding onto their playoff chances by their fingernails. Now they face the team immediately ahead of them in the last playoff spot. With a win, the Reign are just two points back of both Chicago and Western New York. With a loss, they’re five points out with only three games back — what would be a nearly insurmountable gap.
Chicago are undefeated in their last four and are benefiting from the return of Christen Press from national team duty. Seattle counters with the return of Megan Rapinoe, who last week capped a substitute appearance with an injury time goal over the Thorns. With her joining Naho Kawasumi and Manon Melis in the attack, the Reign should have plenty of firepower. If they can hold off the dangerous Press and Sofia Huerta, they’ll have the chance to keep their playoff hopes alive.
