2016 Sounder at Heart Moment of the Year

New, 56 comments

We’re ignoring past years’ group stage and just jumping into the major events that defined Puget Sound soccer in 2016.

The Sounder at Heart Annual Awards wrap up with voting for the Moment of the Year in 2016. Past winners, in order from ‘09 to ‘15, are fans meeting the team after winning the Open Cup in DC, Nyassi brace to win the Open Cup repeat, Alonso’s dagger to earn Open Cup three-peat, Zakuani returns to MLS play & exchanges jerseys with Mullan, Traore’s goal to draw level with Tigres in CCL play, Pappa pickpockets Pinedo to secure Supporters’ Shield, and the Red Card Wedding.

In 2016 the nominees are a mix of negative and very positive. There will be no group stage as in some previous seasons. You have ten options and you only get one vote. In alphabetical order your choices are;

Brian Schmetzer hired as coach of Seattle Sounders FC

Schmetz lived and breathed the Sounders from high school throughout his life. When Sigi was let go, Brian stepped in to become the interim coach. He did so well that the club signed him as the permanent head coach during the playoffs. He won an MLS Cup. I’m completely and totally biased in favor of Brian Schmetzer.

Clint Dempsey’s heart problems force withdraw from playing to end ‘16

Shortly after dominating the Copa America Centenario Clint Dempsey stopped playing soccer. He had to observe his club team win an MLS Cup due to heart problems that are keeping him from the USMNT and an unsure status in 2017.

Hope Solo suspended by US Soccer

Solo’s mild statements against the Swedish National Team at the Olympics were enough to be a final straw. She was suspended by US Soccer and is currently not part of the Reign, nor the USWNT.

Megan Rapinoe kneels during national anthem

Soccer and politics mixed when ‘Pinoe followed the lead of Colin Kaepernick in taking a knee to protest injustice. She would keep kneeling while with the Reign and the USWNT.

Nicolas Lodeiro signed by Sounders

A number 10 from one of the greatest soccer nations in the world chose Seattle. He chose us. He chose to become a Sounder, despite a coaching change and a horrible year. Things were quite different from that day forward.

Obafemi Martins sold just prior to season starting

The year didn’t start with a good note. It started with the man who finished second in 2015 MVP voting moving to China just a couple weeks before a huge two-leg series against Club America.

Roman Torres penalty kick wins MLS Cup ‘16

When MLS Cup reached the sixth round of penalties to decide the winner it was centerback Torres that stepped to the spot.

Sigi Schmid fired by team

He earned his entry into the US Soccer Hall of Fame as a Sounder, but in 2016 his leash ran out. The official word was that he and the club "mutually part ways." His five major trophies and second best record from ‘09 to ‘16 were not enough to grant him time to reach the end of the year.
