Major Link Soccer: Minnesota spends big money on Molino

New, 70 comments

It turns out expansion teams get a lot of Garber Bux to spend these days. Chicago may host the All-Star Game, but not in Bridgeview. Could Earthquakes fans find a way to cheer for Landon Donovan again ?

Fox Sports profiles another potential MLS expansion city (or area); this time it's whatever you want to call the combination of Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and the immediate region. The Carolina Railhawks owner is serious about moving to the big leagues.

Already unable to keep track of all the expansion bids going on? Well, here's one more. Phoenix Rising FC is officially in the running to bring MLS soccer to Arizona.

An unnamed MLS team has made a bid for German defensive midfielder Florian Jungwirth, but his current coach at Darmstadt 98, former Toronto DP Torsten Fringssays it's not happening unless they can find a like-for-like replacement.

It sounds like the Chicago Fire will be the host for the 2017 MLS All-Star Game, and in this case that doesn't mean Bridgeview, Illinois. Instead, the site will be Soldier Field. Is this a message to the Fire that it's time to ditch the suburbs?

With Landon Donovan's move to RSL seemingly halted, is he looking for another MLS home? Center Line Soccer runs with the concept of Donovan returning to the bay area, despite his years dominating on the other end of the California rivalry.

Atlanta United are making a run at the best expansion team roster ever, on paper. They've brought in another Argentine - this time it's centerback Leandro Gonzalez Pirez from Estudiantes, and he 23-year-old is a TAM signing. Tata Martino's "no comment" response in English when asked about filling the third DP spot on the team may be telling, as well. Either way, they've surpassed 27,000 season tickets sold before stepping onto the pitch for MLS play.

Minnesota United, meanwhile, have reportedly made a big move for winger Kevin Molino. Dishing out 650k in various forms of MLS funny money (of which they have a lot as an expansion team), they get Molino, who was unsatisfied at Orlando City, as well as a Wisconsin-born backup goalkeeper.

What does the study suggesting racial bias in MLS refereeing mean about American soccer culture? This SBNation piece digs into the story and talks to players, the Professional Referee Organization, and experts.
