The American Society of Magazine Editors on Tuesday released its top covers of 2016, with the Health and Fitness issue of local publication Ville Magazine among the nominees for the ASME Readers' Choice Awards in the Best Sports and Fitness category. You might remember seeing a few Sounders on the cover of this magazine.

Former UW player Michael Harris signed on for a third year with Oklahoma City Energy. Harris is joined by two other  Seattle area players Miguel Gonzalez (former Seattle U player) and his brother Daniel Gonzalez.

U.S. Soccer

Getting off on the right foot for 2017 includes updating your calendar for all the important soccer that will be coming your way this year.

Bobby Wood took a major step in 2016, earning honors as SBI American Soccer Player of the Year. Ethan Horvath is another player that took big steps in 2016, and is taking another step in the right direction by signing for Club Brugge of Belgium.

The U.S. Men’s National Team will make its first-ever visit to Chattanooga on Feb. 3 when they host regional rival Jamaica. Kickoff in front of an expected capacity crowd of 20,000 at Finley Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET, and the match will be broadcast live on FS1 and UniMas.

Having met 23 times, the USA and Jamaica have become well acquainted through the years. Check out five of the best MNT matches vs. the Reggae Boyz.

Manfred Schellscheidt in 1970 became the USA's first A-license coach. He won youth, amateur and pro national titles, coached at every level of the U.S. men's national team program, and entered the Hall of Fame in 1990. He is also still playing at 76.

Belgium international Axel Witsel is set to join Tianjin Quanjian in the latest high-profile acquisition by a Chinese Super League side. The newly-promoted side is managed by former Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro. Witsel is expected to sign a five-year deal worth a reported €20m (£17m) a year.

What does the game of soccer mean to Besart Berisha? "You must understand me," he implored The Australian in 2012, "this is not just a game for me. I did not learn nothing else. I did not finish school. This is my life. I don't have anything else. I always wanted to be a professional. I am very passionate about what I do. I don't go into a game saying ‘this is just a game'. This is everything for me because it helps me and my family to try and have a better life than before."

Watching someone score a "scorpion kick" is a thing of beauty - just take a look at Oliver Giroud in "Goals of the week". Having two scorpion kicks scored in a week is unheard of, but that's not to say that they haven't been scored before. If you need a breakdown of how it was scored, here is a great look at it.

Speaking of goals that are unheard of, Notts County, the oldest club in the English football leagues, has had 3 goals scored against them by Cambridge United (yes Hanauer's old team) in the last 18 months that leave you scratching your head.

Major League Soccer

Two Major League Soccer clubs have interest in American/Italian Giuseppi Rossi. The current Fiorentina player is on loan in Spain to Celta Vigo. The New Jersey native has been capped 30 times by Italy.

Minnesota United has acquired Collin Martin in trade from D.C. United. The often injured midfielder has played sparingly for D.C. United since his signing in 2013.

Columbus Crew SC completed the signing of Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah as a designated player on Tuesday. Mensah is a World Cup veteran with Ghana, having played in the 2010 and 2014 cups.

Sporting KC Homegrown players Erik Palmer-Brown and Daniel Salloi have returned to Kansas City after completing loan spells in Europe. Palmer-Brown was a regular at center back for Portuguese giants FC Porto’s B team, while Salloi spent the last six months in his native Hungary with Gyirmot SE.
