Making the Western Conference Finals is a signal for a pretty good year. The Seattle Sounders finished 2nd in the regular season and are now assured of at least a top two finish in the West’s playoffs. But, because MLS is MLS, the games are a long way off. Leg one isn’t until November 21 (7 PM, FS1), with Leg two all the way on November 30 (7:30 PM, ESPN).
As of today, their first game is 15 days away. That’s 15 days for you to forget about the playoffs and the Sounders. We’re here to make certain that doesn’t happen.
Today’s reminder that the Sounders are in the West Finals against the Houston Dynamo (another two-leg, aggregate-goal series with an away goal tie-breaking mechanism) is:
This may be blasphemy, but the case could be made that Frei is the best ever Seattle Sounders keeper. While Kasey Keller certainly had a better overall career, a comparison of their times as Sounders may come out in Frei’s favor.
Yes, Frei won the MLS Cup MVP last year, but he’s carried that magic into 2017 and set the team record for shutouts in a season. He is also riding a four-match playoff shutout streak. It was way back in the 13th minute of leg one against the Colorado Rapids that he last gave up a playoff goal. In 2016 he only gave up three goals in six games. In 2015 he gave up five goals in three games, and in 2014 it was three goals against in four games.
That’s an impressive 0.70 goals against average in the MLS Cup Playoffs, with seven shutouts and a 79% save percentage. His record in the playoffs is 8-3-4.
He is ninth in MLS for shutouts all time with 59 (40 with the Sounders), and second among active keepers. Frei is also second in wins among active keepers, despite having five seasons with the awful version of Toronto.
Sweet Stefan Frei is why you need to remember that the Seattle Sounders are in the Western Conference Finals once again. He’s why you need your friends to join us at CenturyLink Field on November 30 at 7:30 PM.
