Major Link Soccer: US Youth International named to Liga MX best XI

Jonathan Gonzalez made the best XI at age 18 and could be the next USMNT star.

Seattle

After spending two years in rehabilitation, the man charged with stabbing a professor after a Sounders game in 2013 is being re-charged for the deadly attack.

MLS

The rumors of Obafemi Martins to Vancouver seem to have had cold water thrown on them as the Nigerian signed an extension with Shanghai Greenland Shenhua.

Toronto FC’s stadium partner is now under common ownership. The Canadian Football League (the one that is like the NFL) defending Grey Cup Champion Toronto Argonauts were partially owned by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Group and now is fully owned by MLSE.

With the MLS Cup victory, TFC is aiming to become the best in MLS and North America. They want to replicate the Yankees success if they can (they already have won in Yankee Stadium).

Toronto went from celebrating MLS Cup (boo), to losing Raheem Edwards, to watching their former speedster land one province over with the Montreal Impact. Will the Reds regret losing Edwards? Did Toronto get an offer to avoid having anyone taken in the draft and turned it down?

David Beckham has made a substitution as he tries to get his Miami MLS bid over the line, Jorge and Jose Mas are joining his ownership group. The Miami businessmen are replacing the majority partner Todd Boehly who dropped out. The local ties should help Beckham get his club.

It always seems LAFC’s group is doing something right as they lead up to their inaugural season and part of that is owner Peter Guber. A part-owner of the Warriors and Dodgers, Guber is trying to translate the success of those clubs into his newest one.

LAFC will at least have one thing solved that LA Galaxy couldn’t last season, a centerback pairing. LAFC has traded for Walker Zimmerman and Laurent Ciman in the last few days and the two MLS Defender of the Year candidates are ready to play together.

USA

The USMNT has another future star brewing and its Monterrey’s midfielder, Jonathan Gonzalez. The 18-year old American made the Liga MX Best XI and helped lead his club to the final before falling to Tigres UANL.

The USSF has eight candidates that are approved for the Presidential race. It’s unclear which one of the nine candidates did not get the required endorsements. US Soccer will announce the eight after background checks are completed.

A novel way to run the federation would be like a sports team and now they may be doing just that. As the election goes forward the Board of Directors is considering changes to the governing structure with the President acting as Chairman of the Board and a GM being hired to run the USMNT (and maybe others). It follows a structure used by many European federations.

World

Europe’s leading LGBT charity partnered with Forza Football to survey fans on their opinions about homophobia in the sport ahead of World Cups in Russia and Qatar. The US was squarely in the middle of the polls. Over a third of Americans that responded were uncomfortable with an openly gay or bi player representing the country.

The NBCSN Premier League coverage you were missing is finally here, Joe Scarborough is hosting a story that dives into the tradition and history of each club and its supporters.
