Author’s Note: Yes, we are really doing a gamethread for the Kick in for Houston charity event. Welcome to the off season, sometimes we talk about soccer and sometimes we rank fruit.

This game was played on Saturday, but is on FS1 on Sunday.

Three Big Storylines

  1. Stu Holden is the driving force behind this game. It was his idea to throw a charity soccer game to benefit the victims of Hurricane Harvey. As of the writing of this post (Friday at Noon) Kick in for Houston has raised $234,083 of its $500,000 goal with quite a few donation opportunities to come.
  2. What else are you going to do on a Saturday afternoon? And they do have some pretty cool looking jerseys plus you get to see an actual astronaut play soccer against a YouTube sensation or two.
  3. Before the USMNT failed to qualify for the World Cup, Alexi Lalas went on a tirade calling the US players “soft, tattooed millionaires” creating quite the stir. While he might not have called out Clint Dempsey in particular, he does have tattoos and makes quite a bit of money. Let’s hope they are on opposite teams.

The Roster

Stu Holden - Former USMNT player, creator of the event and he really really really LOVES Houston

Clint Dempsey - Joint all time USMNT leading scorer, Stu’s buddy. I’m not saying they delayed this event until after the MLS Playoffs so Dempsey could play, but they clearly delayed the event until after the MLS Playoffs so Dempsey could play

Mia Hamm - Mia Hamm

Landon Donovan - The Mia Hamm of the USMNT

Steve Nash - The best basketball player from Victoria, co-owner of the Vancouver Whitecaps

Chad Ochocinco - Star of the Zakuani and Friends Charity game

Alex Bregman - Shortstop for the Houston Astros

Jake Paul - YouTube sensation? From watching the first 22 seconds of his This is Jake Paul video he rides motorcycles, blows things up, drives cars and is from Ohio

Eddie Johnson - One of two correct answers to the question of “Which Eddie for the USMNT did you think was going to earn 130 caps and play in at least three World Cups?” Former Sounder

DeMarcus Beasley - Diamond seller and four time USMNT World Cup veteran

Brian McBride - Recipient of the Daniel De Rossi elbow and namesake of a Craven Cottage bar

Scott Kelly - A real life astronaut

Bode Miller - Three time Olympic silver medalist in alpine skiing

Brian Ching - Three year teammate of Zach Scott at Gonzaga, former Sounder

Roger Clemens - Another baseball guy, he is listed below that shortstop baseball guy above so he must not be as popular?

Chris Wondolowski - Belgian hero

Dwayne De Rosario - Another Canadian, probably their second best soccer player, maybe third

Kade Speider - Another YouTube sensation

Taylor Twellman - ESPN guy and co-host of the defunct Big Head Red Head Podcast

Alexi Lalas - Professional soccer provocateur and co-host of the defunct Big Head Red Head Podcast

Charlie Davies - Legend of Hammarby IF and possessor of a perfect one goal in one appearance for Bethlehem Steel in 2017

Chris Myers - Former NFL Center for the Houston Texans

Kyle Martino - Son in law of Susan Sarandon and one of eight US Soccer presidential candidates. Wants to put goals under basketball hoops

From a Sounders Point of View

Will Dempsey elbow Alexi Lalas in the face on ‘accident’? This seems like something we would be interested in.
