It started in the first minute and didn’t get much better for the Seattle Sounders team on the field to start the 4-2 loss to Atlanta United in the Carolina Challenge Cup. Two big defensive mistakes by trialists gifted Atlanta two quick goals, and the Sounders failed to put up much of a fight with the third-string lineup on the field. After shoring up the squad with starters in the second half, Seattle mounted a bit of a comeback through goals from Henry Wingo and Will Bruin, but it was always going to be a tall order to make up the deficit since AUFC had added two more in the meantime. For the Sounders coaching staff, this was surely a valuable exercise, getting a look at potential reserve players facing MLS level competition.
