Since making his professional debut in 2004, Clint Dempsey has scored nearly 200 goals for club and country. To the best of our research, six of them have come on free kicks. The most recent of those came on Friday, capping off his second international hat trick in the United States’ 6-0 win over Honduras. It was his first free kick goal at the international level.
It may have been his most impressive free-kick goal, as well. The shot came from practically the corner of the penalty box, dipping over the wall and somehow striking the side netting at the far post.
But don’t just take our word for it. We gathered videos of all six of Dempsey’s free-kick goals to let you judge for yourself.
March 24, 2017, vs. Honduras, World Cup qualifying
Feb. 24, 2016, vs. Club America, CONCACAF Champions League
Standing 30 yards out, this seemed a bit too deep for Dempsey’s range. No matter, he somehow managed to bend this around the wall and strike the back of the net with intense force.
Nov. 2, 2015, vs. FC Dallas, MLS Cup playoffs
A little closer in than the goal against Club America, but arguably even more important. This proved to be the game-winner.
April 13, 2014, vs. FC Dallas, MLS regular season
The force with which Dempsey hit this 30-yard bomb is impressive, as it took a direct line to the underside of the crossbar before bouncing just inside the goal-line.
May 6, 2012 vs. Sunderland, English Premier League
This has some similarities to the Club America goal in that it wrapped around the wall, but that may have been more a result of poor positioning. Give Dempsey credit for getting all of it, though.
April 7, 2012, vs. Bolton, English Premier League
Another deep kick, also with enough power to force its way past the goalkeeper who actually got a hand to it.
