First-half roundup
Clint Dempsey scored his 56th career international goal, putting away a close range shot off a feed from Cristian Pulisic to give the United States a 1-0 lead. But Panama was able to equalize a few minutes later to send the game into halftime tied 1-1.
Three Big Storylines:
Clint Dempsey had a hat trick and Christian Pulisic was a force of nature in attack with a goal and two assists (both to Dempsey) plus drawing the foul that Dempsey scored on a free kick and the shot that rebounded to Sebastian Lletget to open scoring against Honduras in the United States’ 6-0 win on Friday. Dempsey is now only two goals back from Landon Donovan’s USMNT record. Overall Dempsey has played against Panama 10 times and has three goals, but he has never scored in Panama.
It was not all good news for the USMNT on Friday. Lleget opened the scoring in the 5th minute with his first international goal, but then broke his foot and will be out for 4-6 months. Also sent home were Jordan Morris, John Brooks and Michael Orozco while Tijuana’s Paul Arriola was added to the roster. Jermaine Jones is back from suspension and available for selection.
The USMNT has won five straight World Cup Qualifying matches against Panama, including a dramatic 3-2 comeback win in 2013. It was the final game of The Hex and the USMNT had already qualified for Brazil, Panama needed a win to finish fourth and push Mexico to fifth place and out of the World Cup. Panama was up 2-1 heading into stoppage time and then Graham Zusi scored the goal that saved Mexico’s World Cup hopes and knocked out Panama. Aron Johannsson added to the misery with a winner to make it 3-2. This is the first trip back to Panama since that game.
From a Sounders Point of View:
Roman Torres will be tasked with trying to stop the USMNT attack for Panama.
Joevin Jones leads Trinidad and Tobago as they host Mexico at 4 PM (see below). T&T are coming off a 1-0 home win over Panama that netted them their first three points of qualifying. A result in this second home game in a row would go a long ways towards T&T having a realistic shot at a top 4 finish in The Hex. Mexico are leading qualifying with seven points from three played and come into the game off a 2-0 home win over Costa Rica on Friday.
Nico Lodeiro and Uruguay head to Lima to take on Peru at 7:15 PM. Uruguay are second in CONMEBOL qualifying with 23 points from 13 games played. Peru are in eighth with 15 points from 13 played. The top 4 automatically qualify with the fifth place team making a playoff. There are 18 games total in CONMEBOL qualifying, a win here would put Uruguay in a great position to advance and virtually eliminate Peru. Lodeiro was an unused substitute on Thursday in Uruguay’s 4-1 loss in Brazil.
