The United States Women’s National Team will play its second match of the 2017 SheBelieves Cup Saturday against England. Coverage begins on FOX at 2:00 p.m. PT, while the match will likely kick off around 2:30 p.m. at Red Bull Arena in New Jersey.
The United States beat Germany 1-0 earlier this week when Lynn Williams collected and buried a Christen Press shot off the post. Now, they turn their attention to an England side that lost 2-1 to France.
England is a country on the rise in women’s soccer. The squad finished third in the 2015 World Cup, by far its best finish, and is currently ranked fifth in the world by FIFA.
If England approaches the match in the same way as the first half against France, it could spell trouble for the Americans. England moved the ball well through the midfield and committed to a pressing game. It worked until they seemingly got tired in the second half.
The U.S. midfield, meanwhile, looked absent against Germany. They’ll need to make some adjustments if they want to set the tone from the beginning. Another factor will be the impressive Lucy Bronze, who at right back is a big contributor to England’s attack — bringing width, a dangerous cross, and a wicked shot from distance.
In addition to what should be a thrilling match, fans in the stands will be treated to a special moment. Christie Rampone, the second-most capped player in the history of international women’s soccer with 311, will be honored before the match. Rampone served as U.S. captain from 2008-2015 and is the only remaining player from the 1999 Women’s World Cup that is playing professionally.
Today doesn’t mark the end of Rampone’s career, however. At 41 years old, on the heels of a standout defensive showing in 2016, she’ll return to her NWSL club Sky Blue FC for another season — showing no signs of slowing down any time soon.
This is the first USWNT match to air on network TV since the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final. That match combined for 26.7 million viewers, making it the most-watched soccer game, male or female, in American history.
