Three Big Storylines:
- Memorial Day Weekend is here and MLS has decided to welcome the impending arrival of summer with the inaugural MLS Summer Beat concert series. Mike Will opens the series on Friday in Atlanta. The game between Atlanta United and New York City FC is on Sunday in a sold-out Bobby Dodd Stadium. Saturday sees Robert DeLong playing in Occidental Square before, during halftime and after the FA Cup Final that precedes the Seattle Sounders hosting the Portland Timbers. And lastly Nortec Collective presents Bostich + Fussible will play Avaya Stadium pregame before the Cali Clasico featuring the San Jose Earthquakes and the LA Galaxy on Saturday night. All games featuring an MLS Summer Beat concert series show are on national TV, listings below.
- Friday night sees another Canadian MLS team open the MLS weekend as Toronto FC host the Columbus Crew SC in their third meeting of this young season. The winner of this game will take home the Trillium Cup as the Crew won the first meeting 2-1 on April 15th and TFC won the second match 2-1 on May 10th. Both games were at Mapfre Stadium in Columbus. TFC broke their 6 match winning streak in MLS play last Friday with a 1-1 draw at New York Red Bulls, but they are still atop the Supporters’ Shield standings heading into Memorial Day Weekend.
- Sunday sees a pair of National TV games in their traditional timeslots with Atlanta United hosting NYCFC and FC Dallas hosting Houston in the battle of Texas. FC Dallas rested almost all their starters on Thursday when they went to Chicago to play the Fire and it cost them giving up two early goals en route to a 2-1 loss. At least those starters will be ready for their Sunday night showcase.
From a Sounders Point of View:
Last week in this space we talked about Just Getting Three Points. Let’s do that again in the Cascadia Cup matchup against the Portland Timbers on Saturday.
Outside of the Three Point Manifesto, Sounders fans will be cheering for D.C. United as they make the cross continent trip to Cascadia to take on the Vancouver Whitecaps (Saturday, 4 PM, MLS Live).
Cheer for the Colorado Rapids to turn around their horrible start to the season and get a home win over Sporting Kansas City (Saturday, 5 PM, MLS Live).
An Orlando City win over the Minnesota United in Minnesota would be cool (Saturday, 5 PM, MLS Live).
Real Salt Lake losing at home to a surprising spry Philadelphia Union team is ideal as well (Saturday, 5 PM, MLS Live).
Lastly, let’s look for a pair of Draws in the Cali Clasico and the unnamed Texas game between Houston and FC Dallas.
