Temperatures in Portland are forecast to be in the 90s on Sunday. The combination of direct sunlight, FieldTurf and stadium structure resulted in concern for player safety. MLS, ESPN, the Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders agreed to move the match to 7:30 PM Pacific. It will now be on ESPN2 rather than ESPN. Pregame coverage will start at 7 PM.
There may still be water breaks as the temperatures will still be quite high. But Providence Park’s playing surface should cool off when it is not in the sun.
Direct sun creates a layer directly above artificial turf that's 30-45 degrees higher than air temps. Late kick means field temp = air temp.

This should reduce the chance of heat injury to players, officials and team staffs.
If you are attending the game, please hydrate. While the athletes were always in more danger due to the unique conditions at Providence Park temperatures over 90 are not typical for us Cascadians. We also don’t have trainers monitoring our every moment.
As a reminder to hydrate drink water, eat fruits and vegetables, drink fluid replacement beverages or sports drinks, consume more water/hydrating liquids than you’ve lost and limit your consumption of alcohol and caffeine.
Finally, remember to have water available to put out any bonfires. We do not want them to spread beyond their intended timber.
