Three Big Storylines:
- As the calendar flips to July, action in MLS is heating up. The last game of June sees Friday Night MLS on National TV with Real Salt Lake hosting Orlando City. Real Salt Lake is the only team in MLS averaging less than 1.0 points per game with 17 points earned through 18 played and are 10th in the 11 team Western Conference (Colorado is last with 16 points from 16 played.) but they have won three games in a row at home. Orlando sit in fourth in the Eastern Conference and will have Cyle Larin back in the starting lineup after he was cleared by the league to play following a DUI charge.
- Rivalry Week in MLS was last week, but that has not kept one of the best rivalries in MLS from being played this week as the San Jose Earthquakes play their annual game against the LA Galaxy at Stanford Stadium in the appropriately named California Clasico. The Quakes and Galaxy come into their Clasico both above the red line in 5th and 6th respectively in the Western Conference. They are about to see a lot more of each other since both won in the US Open Cup on Tuesday and are tentatively scheduled to play July 12th in the tournament quarterfinals.
- Sunday sees Fox Sports 1 having the Philadelphia Union hosting the New England Revolution. The Revs are 0-6-3 away from home and will be looking to improve upon their 0.33 PPG away average. These teams played on Tuesday this week in the US Open Cup where New England won 2-1 at home. The Union will be looking to return the favor. To finish off the long holiday weekend; Atlanta United, Minnesota United, FC Dallas, the Colorado Rapids and LA Galaxy all will host 4th of July matches followed by a fireworks display.
From a Sounders Point of View:
The Sounders have the weekend off before heading to Colorado on Tuesday. The Rapids are hosting the Houston Dynamo on Saturday night (6 PM, MLS Live), keep an eye on that game for a preview of Tuesday’s match.
