Welcome to Sounder at Heart’s daily Gold Cup coverage. Again this year during the tournament we will have daily posts with information and commentary about the games. The Gold Cup is CONCACAF’s Championship.

Costa Rica vs. Canada:

Both Canada and Costa Rica won their opening match, Canada handled French Guiana 4-2 behind a brace from 16 year old Alphonso Davies who by appearing in the Gold Cup is now cap tied to Canada. Costa Rica got a goal from the San Jose Earthquakes Marco Urena and made it stand up in their 1-0 win over a lively Honduras team that was in the match until the end. A win by either team will guarantee them passage to the knockout phase and a draw would likely see both teams advance.

While Canada struggled at times with French Guiana, particularly once the rain started to come in torrential waves, the story line was all about Davies and his two goal performance. The Vancouver Whitecaps teenager looks to have a long future with the national team but Canada will have to defend better today. If they give up the same chances to Costa Rica as they did to French Guiana the Ticos will run away with the group and destroy Canada’s goal differential in the process.

Honduras vs. French Guiana:

With opening game losses both teams are playing for their Gold Cup future. French Guiana was somewhat over matched by Canada going down 3-0 before breathing life into their game with two quick goals in the 69th and 70th minutes to make for an exciting finish.

Honduras played one of the tournament favorites in Costa Rica extremely even outside of a momentary lapse when Costa Rica scored it’s lone goal. The attack looked dangerous even if they did not score. Expect to see the Houston Dynamo’s Boniek Garcia, Alberth Elis and Romell Quioto again power the Honduras attack to better results while also playing in their home stadium. Honduras knows that goal differential could be a deciding tie breaker in their quest to return to the knockout rounds after failing to advance in the 2015 Gold Cup group stages, look for them to score early and often tonight. Playing in the later game will help their cause as the sweltering Houston heat will have subsided.

From a Sounders Point of View:

No Seattle Sounders in action today. Cristian Roldan, Jordan Morris and Jordy Delem are in Tampa Bay preparing for the USMNT (Roldan and Morris) versus Martinique (Delem) match tomorrow.
