The USMNT plays group leader Martinique in today’s featured Gold Cup match

Three Big Storylines:

  1. The United States had an underwhelming opener to the Gold Cup campaign when they tied Panama 1-1 in Nashville. Was it just the heat sapping their legs after an almost two week training camp leading up to the game? Or was there something else that left a Tennessee state record to watch a soccer game of 47,622 fans wanting after the opener? Today’s game against a Martinique team that easily handled Nicaragua 2-0 (it really could have been 5-0 with better finishing) looked to be a formality when the draw was made, but now it is likely for Group B supremacy and a theoretically easier path to the final. For this to be the Kellyn Acosta coming out party we all anticipated, the midfield needs to make vast improvements from Saturday.
  2. Speaking of the midfield, there needs to be changes from the Acosta, Dax McCarty; Alejandro Bedoya, Joe Corona, Kelyn Rowe 2-3 in US Soccer’s currently preferred 4-2-3-1 formation. But will those changes include the Seattle Sounders Cristian Roldan? The 22 year old midfielder has yet to make his USMNT debut but would be cap tied to the USA if (when?) he steps on the field. Dom Dwyer has scored in his first two matches for the USMNT since becoming a citizen and looks to be continuing his duties as the lone forward keeping Jordan Morris on the bench in the late game change of pace substitution role he has been playing.
  3. Panama will be happy with the draw against the USMNT and will be looking to build into their Gold Cup with a game against a Nicaragua team that looked extremely vulnerable in their opener against Martinique. Their match will take place before the featured USMNT game in Raymond James Stadium tonight, so look for the game to kickoff in a practically empty stadium as fans file in for the second half of the double header. With Nicaragua playing a heavily favored USMNT in the group finale on Saturday, this is practically an elimination game for the Central American side.

From a Sounders Point of View:

Jordan Morris and Cristian Roldan were covered above in #2, but Martinique has a Sounders connection as well. Jordy Delem started and went all 90 minutes in Martinique’s opening win and former Sounder Kevin Parsemain was the CONCACAF Man of the Match for the game with a goal and two additional free kicks that forced tough saves from the Nicaragua keeper. Delem is the only Martinique player currently in MLS.
