Welcome to Sounder at Heart’s daily Gold Cup coverage. Again this year during the tournament we will have daily posts with information and commentary about the games. The Gold Cup is CONCACAF’s Championship.

Today the group stage begins to wrap up with Group A finishing their play. During the next three days the big question will be which two of the three third place teams advance to the knockout stage. Current standings will give us a clue, but a team that lost their first two games could get into the conversation with a big win in the group finale. Standings as of now in Group A it is Honduras in third with 3 points and +2 Goal Differential. Group B it is Martinique (3 pts, +1) and Group C El Salvador (3 pts, 0). We will not be able to determine who advances until Sunday night’s Group C play is finished, and it looks like at least one spot will be determined by tie-breakers so every goal is going to count over the next three days.

Costa Rica vs. French Guiana:

Unlike the World Cup or last summers Copa America, these group stage deciding games are not being played concurrently. Costa Rica and Canada drew in their game on Tuesday and both teams can finish on seven points if they win their final game. Thus it will be in Costa Rica’s best interest to score as many as possible tonight.

French Guiana earned a historic point on Tuesday when they held Honduras to a scoreless draw. But they enter this game on zero points because that game was deemed a forfeit after French Guiana played an ineligible player in Florent Malouda. French Guiana knowingly played the ineligible Malouda and have stated that it was an effort to take a principled stand regarding CONCACAF and FIFA eligibility rules in dealing with dual nationals. Regardless of intentions, the 0-0 draw is officially recorded as a 3-0 win for Honduras and Malouda has been given a two game suspension along with a stadium ban.

Canada vs. Honduras:

Canada has been in this position before with Honduras. In World Cup qualification for 2014, Canada was in a position to advance to the Hex (CONCACAF’s final round of qualification) if they only earned a draw away to Honduras or Cuba could beat Panama at home and Canada’s goal differential was better than Panama’s. Honduras won that game 8-1 scoring four goals by the 33rd minute, destroying any semblance of hope for goal differential and eliminating Canada from the Brazil World Cup. In World Cup qualification for 2018, Canada was again eliminated in the same fourth round of qualification by finishing third in the four team group to Mexico and Honduras. The top 2 advanced to the Hex.

While it would not particularly even the ledger, Canada knocking Honduras out of the Gold Cup and guaranteeing they advance would start to even the score. 16 year old Alphonso Davies leads all Gold Cup scorers with three goals for Canada. But Davies was subbed out in the 69th minute of Canada’s 1-1 draw with Costa Rica on Tuesday and it is unclear if he will be available.

Despite having a +2 goal differential, Honduras is yet to score in the Gold Cup (Thanks to French Guiana’s forfeit for introducing that confusing statement.). The Houston Dynamo powered attack led by Romell Quioto, Alberth Elis and Boniek Garcia have been largely stymied so far. Canada’s Goalkeeper Milan Borjan was named CONCACAF Man of the Match for the Costa Rica game and he will like to extend that Honduras scoreless streak by 90 minutes.

From a Sounders Point of View:

No Seattle Sounders in action today. Cristian Roldan, Jordan Morris and Jordy Delem are in Philadelphia preparing for games tomorrow and Oniel Fisher is recovering after playing an effective 90 minutes for Jamaica in yesterday’s 0-0 draw with Mexico.
