The USMNT enters the Gold Cup knockout stage with six new players. Costa Rica v Panama opens todays doubleheader

Soccer: 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup-USA at Martinique
Has Jordan Morris rediscovered his scoring touch with the USMNT?

Three Big Storylines:

  1. The United States had a lackluster group stage of the Gold Cup, so they called in the maximum six reinforcements. Gone are Cristian Roldan (he played 90 minutes against Martinique for his USMNT debut) and five others. In for the knockout round are Clint Dempsey, Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore, Darlington Nagbe and Jesse Gonzalez. Dempsey is now one goal behind Landon Donovan’s USMNT all-time scoring lead. Donovan is on the call for Fox Sports today, creating an interesting dynamic if Dempsey ties or breaks the record.
  2. El Salvador was one of two third place teams to advance to the knockout stages. They earned a quality 1-1 draw with Jamaica on Sunday to book their spot in the quarterfinals. A one goal loss would also have seen them advance, but the draw against a quality opponent took away all doubt of them advancing. They are captained by the San Jose Earthquakes Darwin Ceren who is also the sole El Salvador player on the roster playing in MLS.
  3. The Gold Cup plays all of these group games as doubleheaders. Meaning if you are a USMNT fan and buy a ticket to today’s game you also get a very good quarterfinal matchup that is Panama versus Costa Rica to open the doubleheader. The downside is that this game will likely start in a relatively empty NFL stadium. Both Costa Rica and Panama are still alive in Russia 2018 World Cup qualifying. Costa Rica sit a comfortable second and look to be well on their way to booking a place in Russia coming off their quarterfinal appearance as CONCACAF’s best team in Brazil 2014. Panama are one point behind the USA for third place in the Hex and the last automatic qualifying spot with four matches yet to play.

From a Sounders Point of View:

Cristian Roldan was sent back to the Seattle Sounders on Sunday and Panama chose to take a young-ish team to this Gold Cup so Roman Torres was never involved with Panama. Both should start tonight for the Sounders.

Jordan Morris has two goals for the tournament and looks to have regained some of the form he has been missing from early season MLS play. Morris is one goal behind in the Golden Boot race currently led by Canada’s Alphonso Davies and Martinique’s Kevin Paresemain. Morris will be joined by Dempsey in today’s matchday 23.
