Clint Dempsey remains stuck on 56 career goals for the United States national team, one behind Landon Donovan’s record. But he still managed to provide the highlight of the evening in Wednesday’s 2-0 win over El Salvador to put the USMNT through to the Gold Cup semifinals.
Deep into first-half stoppage time with the USMNT clinging to a 1-0 lead, Dempsey got the ball with a defender on his back about 25 yards out. With one quick move, he opened up some space, picked up his head and found a streaking Eric Lichaj, who was pinched way in from his right back spot.
Dempsey’s pass was perfectly weighted and hit Lichaj in stride, allowing the Notthingham Forest man to easily control it and slot it between the goalkeeper’s legs.
It was Dempsey’s 19th career assist with the USMNT, tying him with Claudio Reyna for fourth on the all-time list.
