Welcome to Sounder at Heart’s daily Gold Cup coverage. Again this year during the tournament we will have posts with information and commentary about the games. Today we will set the semifinal bracket. Which teams will join the USA and Costa Rica who were both victorious last night?

Note that there is no extra time in the Gold Cup quarterfinals. If either game is tied after regulation the game will go directly to penalty kicks. Keep CONCACAF weird.

Canada vs. Jamaica

Canada has not made the Gold Cup semifinals since 2007 while Jamaica are coming off their best ever Gold Cup losing in the 2015 final. Canada have added Cyle Larin to the roster for the knockout stage. Larin will partner in attack with a red hot Alphonso Davies. The Vancouver Whitecaps 16 year old is leading the Gold Cup scoring race with three goals.

The Seattle Sounders Oniel Fisher played all but 25 minutes of the group stage for Jamaica. Fisher helped Jamaica secure second in their group behind Mexico. The Portland Timbers Darren Mattocks fills out the Cascadia trifecta for this match and the Jamaican speedster has two goals so far in the tournament. Jamaica struggled with El Salvador in their final group match only earning a 1-1 draw. If they play like that again, Canada will have a real chance at pulling the upset.

Mexico vs. Honduras

Teams were allowed to make up to six roster changes before the knockout rounds. The USA took advantage and brought in six reinforcements to a young squad. Mexico made zero changes, bringing in no one. Suspended manager Juan Carlos Osorio either chose not to make changes or had issues with player availability being that Osorio is on shaky ground relating to his future employment and Liga MX starts their Apertura tomorrow.

With a young and unsettled squad, Mexico is ripe for an early upset. The problem is that Honduras have struggled themselves in the Gold Cup group stage. Honduras failed to score in their three matches, only getting a 3-0 forfeit victory when French Guiana played an ineligible player. On paper Honduras has the firepower to upset the CONCACAF giant with the Houston Dynamo trio of Alberth Elis, Romell Quioto and Boniek Garcia, as well as FC Dallas' Maynor Figueroa leading the attack. Honduras will never get a better chance to upset Mexico than tonight.

From a Sounders Point of View:

Jordan Morris and Clint Dempsey are in regeneration mode as they travel to Arlington for Saturday’s semifinal game against Costa Rica.

Fisher is the only Sounder on the field tonight.
