Welcome to Sounder at Heart’s daily Gold Cup coverage. Again this year during the tournament we will have posts with information and commentary about the games. Today is the second semifinal, with the winner playing the USA on Wednesday in Santa Clara. The USMNT beat Costa Rica 2-0 last night behind an assist and a goal from Clint Dempsey.
Note that there is no extra time in the Gold Cup semifinals. If the game is tied after regulation it will go directly to penalty kicks. Keep CONCACAF weird.
This is a rematch of the 2015 Gold Cup Final that Mexico won 3-1. Following that loss Jamaica went on a downward spiral, failing to qualify for CONCACAF’s World Cup qualifying final stage, The Hex. This is also a rematch of a Group C matchup that was a 0-0 final nine days ago in Denver. That game was relatively uneventful with Erick “Cubo” Torres having the best chance of the game for Mexico, but Jamaican keeper Andre Blake was up to the task. In Jamaica’s 2-1 quarterfinal win over Canada, Blake was spectacular while earning CONCACAF man of the match honors saving Jamaica from what looked to be a certain late Canada goal and likely shootout.
Mexico are the favorite and CONCACAF would like nothing better than to be able to promote a USA v Mexico final on Wednesday, but they are again surrounded by controversy regarding their manager Juan Carlos Osorio. Osorio is suspended for the tournament for abusing the fourth official in the Confederations Cup third place game earlier in the month but that has not stopped Osorio from attending every match and sending notes to the sideline and locker room from a suite.
Mexico should control most of the run of play and Jamaica are just fine with playing on the counter attack using their speed to exploit an open Mexico defense. If there is an early goal, especially for Jamaica, look for the game to open up like their group stage game never did and possibly be the most entertaining match of the Gold Cup.
From a Sounders Point of View:
After starting all three group stage matches for Jamaica and playing all but 25 minutes, Oniel Fisher was an unused substitute in Jamaica’s quarterfinal win over Canada.
Jordan Morris and Clint Dempsey are in regeneration mode as they travel to Santa Clara for Wednesday’s Final.
Fisher is the only Sounder on the field tonight.
