One of the games where the Seattle Sounders didn’t make a miracle comeback was way back during their first meeting with the San Jose Earthquakes. Then, as Chris Wondolowski is prone to do, the Quakes scored a last minute goal to save a home point. Heading into Sunday’s 7:30 PM match, it is imperative that the Sounders remember that Wondo is the ultimate low-touch forward. He can change a game in a single moment.
This game will also be a test for Seattle in that their two most creative players are absent. Lodeiro is suspended and Dempsey is out crushing the Gold Cup. That leaves the creative pressure to the fullbacks and several backup midfielders. Watch who gets the initial touches within the attacking third. It is probably going to be a mix of Jones, Leerdam, Evans, Roldan, Shipp and Kovar. This could lead to over-passing, or could create open lanes for each to run onto goal with Bruin opening up space.
Also, it would be nice to get started quickly and to keep that momentum through a match. It’s been a while.
Absences: Injury, international duty and suspension
Seattle: Nicolas Lodeiro is suspended. Clint Dempsey, Oniel Fisher and Jordan Morris are still at the Gold Cup. Osvaldo Alonso (knee) is listed as out. Only Stefan Frei (hip) and Henry Wingo (ankle) are questionable. Tony Alfaro is two yellows from an accumulation suspension.
San Jose: Marco Ureña isn’t back from his duty with Costa Rica. Kip Colvey (knee), Harold Cummings (ankle), Marc Pelosi (knee), and Kofi Sarkodie (calf) are all out. They list no players as questionable. Anibal Godoy is a single yellow from missing a match due to accumulation. Fatai Alashe is two cards away from the same.
Alan Kelly is the center referee.
