Welcome to Sounder at Heart’s daily Gold Cup coverage. Again this year during the tournament we will have daily posts with information and commentary about the games. Today is Matchday 3 and the debut of third and final group: Group C. In case you want to catch up on Group A and Group B, those are the links.

Mexico vs. El Salvador:

Mexico enter the Gold Cup as the defending champion. But Mexico have just finished playing in FIFA’s Confederations Cup that ended on July 2nd. With their loss in the third place match to Portugal they secured fourth place. With such a quick turnaround they are bringing an entirely new squad to the Gold Cup that is filled with young players and fringe national team players attempting to break into the first team with next summer’s World Cup 23-man roster being the big prize.

The big news from the Mexico camp leading up to the Gold Cup kickoff is not that Houston Dynamo striker Erick “Cubo” Torres has been called in to replace Alan Pulido, Pulido was injured in the July 1st friendly against Paraguay held in Seattle. Pulido was injured and Torres was called up. The big news is that Mexico manager Juan Carlos Osorio was suspended on Friday for six matches by FIFA for his actions during and following the Mexico v Portugal third place match at the Confederations Cup.

El Salvador boasts two players that are alumni of the legendary Cal FC team. The amateur team managed by Eric Wynalda beat the Portland Timbers in Portland in the US Open Cup in 2012 before losing to the Seattle Sounders at Starfire. Goalkeeper Derby Carrillo and midfielder Richard Menjivar will look to power an El Salvador club that qualified for it’s first Gold Cup since 2013.

Jamaica vs. Curacao:

Curacao enter the Gold Cup on a high as Caribbean Cup Champions. They beat today’s opponent Jamaica 2-1 in the final that was held June 25th in Martinique. It was their first championship as either Curacao or the Netherlands Antilles. In October of 2010 when the Netherlands Antilles was dissolved, Curacao was recognized by FIFA as their direct successor and inherited their historical record and FIFA ranking.

With Mexico the heavy favorite in Group C, this match is extremely important in determining who will advance. With only 159,000 residents Curacao would seem to be big underdogs even considering their recent triumph in the Caribbean Cup. But Curacao still retains strong ties to the Netherlands and bolsters their ranks with players of dual eligibility including Aston Villa’s Leandro Bacuna and Cuco Martina who played for Southampton last season.

Jamaica enter the Gold Cup looking to take the last step in CONCACAF having lost in the final of the 2015 edition. That was their best finish having only finished as high as third place back in 1993 previously.

Jamaica boast a plethora of MLS talent across the roster including Seattle Sounders own Oniel Fisher. Fisher joins familiar names such as Andre Blake, Alvas Powell, Jermaine Taylor and Kemar Lawrence in Jamaica’s defense. Je-Vaughn Watson in midfield and Darren Mattocks in attack will also be looking to make big impacts.

From a Sounders Point of View:

As stated above, Oniel Fisher is with Jamaica while Cristian Roldan and Jordan Morris are in transit to Tamp Bay with US Soccer as they prepare to play Martinique on Wednesday.
