Three Big Storylines:

  1. The United States Men’s National Team currently sits third in CONCACAF’s final round of qualifying (the Hex) with eight points. The top three teams advance to World Cup Russia 2018, while fourth place earns a playoff berth against Asia’s fifth place team. Costa Rica is in second place with 11 points. Costa Rica won 4-0 in the first meeting of these two teams in the Hex at San Jose, Costa Rica. That scoreline and the effort that went into the game precipitated a leadership change, and it was the last game for beleaguered manager Jurgen Klinsmann.
  2. The USMNT finally has a star. After so many false starts and Freddy Adu inspired “Next Big Things”, the average US Soccer fan has been somewhat slow to embrace it when the Next Big Thing actually shows up and it turns out he is even better than we hoped for. Eighteen-year-old Christian Pulisic is already providing goals and is a regular starter for a Champions League contender in Borussia Dortmund, and might as well be penned into every USMNT starting lineup for the foreseeable future. The only question is where will Pulisic start—in the middle with Michael Bradley, or on the wing where he is extremely effective for Dortmund?
  3. The USMNT is healthy in all spots coming into this match except the defense. First choice starters DeAndre Yedlin and John Brooks are both out with injuries. There are a variety of centerbacks for manager Bruce Arena to call on to replace Brooks, but no one in the player pool provides what Yedlin can bring to the lineup. Currently only converted midfielder Graham Zusi and Eric Lichaj are available as traditional right back options. There has been some talk of moving Geoff Cameron out of the center and starting him as the right back, since he has played that position before. And one has to wonder where Seattle Sounders midfielder Cristian Roldan is practicing in the build up to this match? Roldan is definitely better in the center of the field for the Sounders, but there has been some chatter that, due to the shallow player pool at right back for the USMNT, Roldan’s specific skill set might be particularly suited to that role at the national team level.

From a Sounders Point of View:

Nine Seattle Sounders players are in action across the globe during this FIFA window.

Gustav Svensson - Unused Substitute in Sweden’s 3-2 loss in a World Cup qualifier at Bulgaria on Thursday. Sweden plays Belarus in Borisov on Sunday. The game is available to stream on ESPN 3 at 8:50 AM.

Nicolas Lodeiro - Unused Substitute in Uruguay’s 0-0 home draw against Argentina in World Cup qualifying. Uruguay travel to Paraguay on Tuesday at 4 PM.

Nouhou - Unused Substitute in Cameroon’s 4-0 loss in Nigeria on Friday morning in a World Cup qualifier. Cameroon hosts Nigeria on Monday.

Clint Dempsey, Jordan Morris and Cristian Roldan - USMNT vs Costa Rica. Manager Bruce Arena has indicated that he wants to use Clint Dempsey as a super sub off the bench going forward. Dempsey came off the bench in the Gold Cup semi-finals against this same Costa Rica team in the 66th minute, with the score tied 0-0. Dempsey promptly changed the game with an assist to Jozy Altidore in the 72nd minute and a free kick goal in the 82nd minute to seal the win.

Joevin Jones - Trinidad and Tobago host Honduras at 5 PM on beIN Sports in a World Cup qualifier. T&T need a win today and a win on Tuesday against Panama to have a chance at making the World Cup.

Roman Torres - Panama travel to Azteca and kick off at 6:30 PM tonight on Fox Sports 2. Panama are currently fourth in the Hex and will be looking to move up into one of the automatic qualification spots.

Oniel Fisher - Jamaica play Canada on Saturday in a friendly at Toronto’s BMO Field (4 PM, No TV).
