John Hutchinson has been promoted from S2 assistant coach to head coach following the departure of Ezra Hendrickson to the LA Galaxy. As part of the move, Wade Webber has moved up to the S2 assistant position from the academy ranks, where he was the U18/19 head coach.
Hutchinson is relatively new to the organization, becoming Hendrickson’s top assistant last year. Prior to that he enjoyed a long professional career in Australia, most notably with the Central Coast Mariners, where he made 268 appearances and scored 18 goals as a midfielder. He also made 11 international appearances with Malta. After his playing career he joined the Mariners’ technical staff, where he spent two years.
Joining Hutchinson’s staff is Webber, who grew up in Federal Way and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. The defender went on to star at the University of Portland, graduating in 1988. With no established pro circuit, though, Webber went into a brief retirement, got his master’s degree from Seattle University and taught at Sedro-Woolley High School.
Webber returned to the field in 1994 with the A-League Sounders, and ended up playing three seasons in MLS with FC Dallas and the Miami Fusion. He then returned to the Puget Sound area, teaching history at Thomas Jefferson and serving as the director of coaching at Washington Premier. Webber worked as a Sounders radio analyst starting in 2012 and joined the Sounders Academy staff in 2016.
