Three Big Storylines

  1. The Supporters’ Shield is coming down to the wire. With only three matches to play Atlanta United have a one point lead over the New York Red Bulls, 63-62 points. Both teams have a chance to break the all time MLS points record of 69, set last year by Toronto FC. And it might take a record to win the Shield this year. Atlanta is coming off a 2-0 loss in New Jersey to the Red Bulls and host the New England Revolution on Saturday afternoon while the New York Red Bulls travel to San Jose to play the Earthquakes on Saturday night. Both teams will have 15 days before their next game as they will not play through the international break upcoming next week.
  2. The Western Conference sees FC Dallas as the only team that has clinched a playoff spot and there are seven teams vying for the final five spots. The Vancouver Whitecaps have mostly played themselves out of contention with three consecutive losses to fall six points below the red line, they are at Toronto FC on Saturday. A Vancouver win would give them some hope and if Montreal manages to beat Columbus earlier in the day, it would also eliminate Toronto FC from playoff contention. The LA Galaxy are a manageable two points below the red line and have three matches remaining with by far their toughest game remaining their schedule Saturday as they travel to Sporting Kansas City. A win by the Galaxy in that match might see them finish the season with five wins in a row and a playoff spot as they are at Minnesota United and host the Houston Dynamo to finish the season.
  3. Chris Wondolowski is only two goals behind Landon Donovan for the all time MLS scoring record, Wondo has 143 goals in his career. The Earthquakes are on a five match losing streak and have already been eliminated from the playoffs. San Jose hosts the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night then finishes their season home against the Colorado Rapids and at the Seattle Sounders.

From a Sounders Point of View

The Sounders can clinch their MLS record tying 10th playoff berth in a row this weekend if:

  • Seattle Sounders win vs. Houston Dynamo and ...
  • LA Galaxy lose vs. Sporting KC and ...
  • Vancouver Whitecaps lose or tie vs. Toronto FC

– OR –

While it is always hard to cheer for Sporting Kansas City and a SKC win would make it even harder to somehow clinch a top 2 spot in the Western Conference, it would be nice to lock in that playoff spot and make it an incredible ten out of ten playoffs. The LA Galaxy faltering down the stretch might not be a bad thing as a one off playoff game against Zlatan Ibrahimovic and company might be something to avoid.
